R Fitness: A Gym Design that Combines Light and Space

Shaping Spaces and Igniting Dreams

The designers at Xu Studio drew inspiration from the way light interacts with space, using it to sculpt and shape the gym. One of the standout features is the suspended slogan "People need smile, life need fitness," which is formed by luminous characters hanging in the air. This playful addition adds to the overall fun and energetic atmosphere of the space.

The gym's entrance is connected to the fitness area by a striking red box-shaped aisle. This aisle is composed of LED lamp tubes of different sizes and stainless steel water corrugated mirrors. The interplay of light and shadow, along with the overlapping and intersecting red color, creates a dramatic effect that immediately captures attention.

To further enhance the visual impact, the designers used slashed metal meshes to cover the entire space, matching the LED lights. These metal meshes echo the white slashes on the ground, creating a sense of movement and extension throughout the gym.

The project covers a total of 550 square meters and is located in Shanghai, China. The original solid wall facade was transformed into French windows, allowing natural light to flood the space and creating a more inviting atmosphere.

One of the challenges faced by the designers was the limited space for both strength and relaxation exercises. To overcome this, they designed the lighting of the entire room, allowing for the easy switching between white and red lights to accommodate different types of courses. Background music is also synchronized with the lighting, creating a dynamic and immersive experience for gym-goers.

R Fitness not only aims to provide a space for physical exercise but also to inspire and ignite dreams. The continuous loop of design elements throughout the space, from the ground to the facade and top surface, creates a sense of connection and unlimited continuation. Combined with the theme of red, the use of light allows students to follow the changes in music and lighting, fully immersing themselves in their fitness journey.

This innovative gym design by Xu Studio has been recognized for its creativity and ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
